Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is the term used to describe the growth of abnormal cells lining the air passages inside the lung tissue. These cells divide and grow more rapidly than normal cells and combine to form a cluster or tumour. Lung cancer is not just one disease.

Epidermal growth factor receptors exist on the surface of cells and are activated by binding of their specific ligands, Epidermal Growth Factors, to stimulates epidermal cells to grow and divide. In many cancer patients this receptor is mutated which causes an increased activity of the receptor and ultimately tumor growth. One of the most common mutations in the EGFR is Del19 which means mutation in the expression part in Exon 19.
